Movie Review: Twilight

Several years ago, I vaguely remember my tween-age daughter telling me about Twilight, a new book that she and her friends were reading. Mom had looked it over and assured me it was no big deal. Now, flash forward to opening night of the new big screen version of Twilight and I can tell you from being there, the words “Big Deal” are a HUGE understatement. At our nearest theater, young girls (and their moms) were in line two hours in advance of the theater doors opening and, on a national level, Fandango reported that they had been selling 5 Twilight tickets per second as of early Friday morning, “making Twilight online ticket-seller Fandango's fastest-selling film since The Dark Knight last July.” Yes, it’s a very big deal and the young ladies in your youth group will definitely be seeing this one.

Shortly after Israel’s loud “amens” in response to Joshua’s public confession of his surrendered life and the admonishment to serve the Lord (Joshua 24:14-28), we arrive at the chilling reality of Judges 2:10: “After that whole generation had been gathered to their fathers, another generation grew up, who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done for Israel.”

The cinematic version of the popular video game has Mark Wahlberg in the lead role: A New York City detective out for revenge after finding his wife and infant son slain in their home six months before. A cross between The Matrix, The Fugitive, and (I’ll explain this later) Ghost, Max Payne should appeal to fans of the video game—of which a significant number are teenagers—as well as fans of Wahlberg and effects-laden action flicks.

Hello…my name is (your name here). I’m a youth pastor, and I’m unbalanced.

In ministry, unbalanced lives tend to be the norm more than the exception. It seems that ministry has a way of subtly drawing us into a life that, in the end, is more hurtful to us and to others than many of us would like to admit.

If you ask me, living a balanced life is overrated.

Don’t get me wrong. Balance is something that we, in our 21st-century American culture, emphasize a lot. Yet I can’t help but wonder if we overemphasize the importance of balance in our lives.

We’ve all heard the horror stories—families in shambles, ministries crumbling at their very foundations, kids the dysfunctional byproducts of a life poorly balanced. I heard them growing up from my preacher. I heard them in the classroom in Bible College. I’ve witnessed them with my own eyes as I’ve seen acquaintances, friends, and even mentors lose their grip and hit bottom hard.
