The video warning on the recently released DVD of the iconic TV show’s first few seasons reads: “These early Sesame Street episodes are intended for grownups and may not suit the needs of today’s preschool child.” Say what? Turns out that because Sesame Street was created in the ’60s, it was a bit edgier—including footage with kids riding without bicycle helmets, running through construction sites, and a girl holding an adult male stranger’s hand on the street and going back to his home for ice cream. And Cookie Monster? Well, his diet is a problem when today’s parents are worried about childhood obesity. He also smoked a pipe in one sketch, then ate it. “If we’re guilty of anything, it’s perhaps taking our responsibility to children too seriously,” said a Sesame Workshop official.
