The Hidden Histories Of
Contemporary Christian Music
Part 3 of a series
Henry “Ferd” Hanes was a waiter/pastry chef/hand model working in a small coffee house in Nashville TN in the early 80’s. It was a favorite hang out of many contemporary Christian music singers. It was often said that if you could not feel the presence of the Holy Spirit in Ferd Hanes Banana muffins then you may as well become an atheist.
One of Ferd’s regulars was a long haired gentleman by the name of Rich Mullins. It was sitting there, in Ferd’s coffee shop, (The Wave) , that the late Mr, Mullins was inspired to write the spiritual classic Our God Is An Awesome God.
Few people know that Mullins went through several variations on the title before putting the lyrics to music.
Recently Ferd Hanes, who fell out of favor with the Nashville Christian music community when it was revealed that he once listened to Green Day, decided he would sell the original notes jotted down on a napkin by Rich Mullins on that day of inspiration. When no one bid, Hanes simply posted the notes on his website in a final desperate need for attention from his peers.
Here, at last, are the original adjectives that were nearly used in place of “Awesome” in the now classic song Our God Is An Awesome God.
1.) …tricked out…
2.) …monotheistic…
3.) …really really big…
4.) …occasionally distant….
5.) …muffin lovin…
6.) …is a spiderman fan.
7.) …is like mocha-chino.
8.) …is a dancing’ machine.
9. ) Number nine was actually a series attempts to spell a single word…each attempt was then crossed out…the available letters are… transmuti…transmor…transubstan… transformers robots in disguise
10.) …is a duck.
While there are those who would prefer that these original notes never see the light of day it is a strange sort of pleasure to see how the mind of this simple man of music worked.
God Bless You and thank you, Mr. Mullins
Yeah, I made this up.
